from 45 reviewsA couple months ago I had decided to build a new partscaster in a 50s vintage Strat style, got some great parts and put it all together, fantastic guitar except of course for that Strat single coil hum--especially in my home, where the wiring is old and leaves a lot to be desired. Before I installed the Bzzzzkill Dual Layer (the Strat is loaded with V-Mod II RWRP pickup set, as the body I got came with them, and as an aside I also was pleasantly surprised at how good those pickups actually sound), I did a quick and dirty little recording, just some cowboy chords, clean and dirty in all pickup selector positions.
After installation, which was a breeze, I metered the pickup outputs to find the DCR had gone up by about 4k for all pickups, basically expected. And the hum was completely gone on clean settings (amp is a Fillmore 25), and decreased so much on the drive channel settings, so quiet. The RWRP positions still canceled hum completely, no matter what. The true test would come after recording the After--and I'm super pleased to report that the differences are minimal at best. From the recordings with same amp settings, same day, same recording setup, to my ear there is a slight bit more fullness in the mids, but the treble seems to be pretty intact, the volume is about the same, the lows are still there, the dynamics.
Highly recommended!
Wow! I was able to finely hot to use my single coil strat on a gig and hear all the sonic qualities of those airy sc’s without the tone sucking gate pedal. Btw, easy install!
Thanks Bzzzzkill guys!
This is a Great Product.
Bzzz God Saves the Single Coils 🙏
Can I get an AMEN ?
GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE...
Bzzzzkill does exactly what it promises. It completely eliminated the single-coil hum without changing the tone at all. No loss of highs, no weird compression—my Strat sounds exactly the same, just quiet.
I installed one and immediately ordered more. I’ll be putting these in all of my Strats and recommending them to musicians I help with setups and mods.
Great product. Thanks for delivering on the promise.
The BzzzzKill actually made me smile. My favorite Strat when played with any gain at all, sounded like the generator room at the Hoover Dam !
The BzzzKill quieted it right down. Installation was easy, and it works great.
I’ve been a session guitarist here in Nashville for 40+ years. I’ve had the honor and privilege to work with the best with some of the best equipment available. I have to say that having used so many revolutionary pieces of new gear through the years the Bzzzkill may be one of the most important pieces of gear that I’ve aquired in decades! Who knew that you’re favorite sounding strat could have it’s hum eliminated without compromising it’s tonal integrity! This is nothing short of a miracle! Sincerely, Tom Hemby
Installed Dual Layer Bzzzzkill with no problems. Little more effort than the single layer but not much. This guitar I installed the dual layer in has a full aluminum pickguard shield plate in it and it’s completely quite. It’s a worthwhile addition to add the shield if it doesn’t have one and put the bzzzzkill in at same time. Very nice. Thanks fellows. 👍
I discovered buzzkill recently as I was considering some expensive noiseless pickups as a solution, but I’ve enjoyed the tone (minus the buzz) of my custom shop fat 50’s pickups that came stock on my Strat.
Pleased to report back the product works as advertised, I’ve had a wonderful experience with everyone in the company, customer service was outstanding.
I endorse and recommend this product and company, had a great experience overall! I will be keen on the future products they release. :)
Fantastic product, fantastic support! Everyone with asingle coil Strat should install on, it makes a huge difference!
I have installed the bzzzzkill system on my 1983 squire Japan Strat. I am using Texas special pickups. I have installed a dual bzzzzkill system in my strat. So the reverse wound middle is also hum cancelling..when used alone. My thoughts on the system?
1 it does slightly alter tone but actually I find in a good way takes some of the harshness out of a pickup.. around 4-6k I have installed a dpdt push push switch in one of the tone pots to be able to bypass this system when I don't need it. All systems affect tone anyone telling you different is lying to you. But this affects tone in a good way. It smooths things out.. for clean it's nice to be able to bypass so you can get some of the glass like too end when you need it. My thoughts are this is a good system although not perfect it's better than most I have see or tried. My two cents. My background I have been a professional live sound engineer for over 30 years a amp tech for over 30 years and a guitar player for 49 years... I have owned hundreds of guitars fixed thousands of amps. And I have no skin in this game.
For $200 it's a bargain.
I installed a dual layer BzzzKill on a 2002 Fender Stratocaster. The original pickups were replaced with a Fender pre-wired pickguard setup with Texas Special pickups. The guitar is much quieter now and I would recommend this product, not to mention their high-quality customer service. After my first try at installing the BzzzKill and not getting very much noise reduction, I sent them a video of my installation and requested help. They replied with very thoughtful suggestions and other good tips on how to fix the problem. Below are some problems that I encounter that may be helpful to others.
When I first tried to install the BzzzKill, I was not hearing any real difference in the amount of hum whether I had the black or white wire attached to the pickup and the other wire attached to the ground. What I found was causing this was the soldering iron station. Once I turned it off, there was a lot less hum and I was then able to hear a difference in the amount of hum depending on which wire was attached to the pickup as shown in the installation video.
One other thing that I found could cause hum and a crackling noise through the guitar was my phone. When I placed it too close to the guitar while recording a video, I would get this extra noise. I found that if I recorded the video about a foot or two away from the guitar, I wouldn’t have this phone noise problem.
I've been playing in a local cover band for about 8 years, and always had to choose between my Gibson Les Paul and my Strat depending on the song. The Strat sounded amazing for clean stuff and classic rock, but the second we kicked in any overdrive or distortion, the buzz would drive everyone crazy, especially our sound guy.
I was skeptical about BzzzzKill at first (seemed too good to be true), but got to say I'm blown away. We played a 3-hour gig last weekend and I used the Strat for everything - even the heavier Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam covers that I always used to switch to the Gibson for.
The tone is exactly the same as before from what I can tell, just with no annoying buzz. Our keyboard player, who didn't know I had changed anything, even commented that my guitar sounded "cleaner" through the monitors.
Installation was quick for our tech, and he said the video was helpful. Worth every penny to finally have my fave guitar be my go-to for any song in our setlist. Never thought I would.
Wish I'd had this sooner!
A while back, I tried out my Strat with the newly installed BzzzzKill in front of my computer with my Guitar Rig software. My guitars usually buzz quite badly in this spot, likely due to 2 large monitors nearby that I use for my job. The Strat made no buzz. I thought maybe the stars had aligned and my setup stopped buzzing, but I plugged in my Gibson with normally very quiet humbuckers, and sure enough, loud buzz. My Strat has been notorious for bad buzz since I got it brand new. The only pickup setting I used live on a stage was position 2 and 4, because anything else was too noisy. Now this guitar is super quiet in ALL positions. This gizmo is simply amazing. Most Strat players either have to gut the guitar and change pickups, or live with the buzz. Now I can have the “vintage” sounding tone, with no noise.
My Strat was so noisy that I only used it occasionally, when I needed a specific Strat tone. However since I had the BzzzzKill, it's so clean and quiet it's become my main axe.
BzzzzKill is an amazing product that makes any Strat better than ever.
